The Name

Origins of the Name

Cioccolato Povero takes its name from the Italian ‘Arte Povera’ art movement dating back to the mid 60s. Arte Povera members drove Italian art away from the technically produced abstractions and pop art of the 1960s back to the purity of its pre-industrial roots by creating its tactile masterpieces from materials found at hand, from rags, earth, steel, paper, twigs and coal to name but a few.

Cioccolato Povero also wants to take chocolate back to its roots, by keeping the flavour profile of the chocolate used unadulterated, pure or “poor”. The balance between the ingredients and the chocolate is a fine one and it is my goal to accent the chocolate as much as possible and not mask or disguise the purity and complexities of the single origin cacao. For some creations, the ingredients /fillings will be the star attraction while still leveraging the chocolate as the main attraction. . Quality ingredients sourced from around the globe is integral to what I am striving to achieve.
